Date: 12/02/24
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus. It usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. But it can become severe for high-risk groups including infants, young children, pregnant women, and older adults. Prevention is key for protecting those at high risk of severe cases.
There are two vaccine options for adults: Arexvy® and Abrysvo®.
Arexvy® and Abrysvo® are for adults over age 60. Abrysvo ® is also for pregnant women between 32 and 36 weeks. This vaccine can help protect mom and baby against RSV. Both are single-dose vaccines. And both can be given at your provider’s office or any pharmacy that administers vaccines. Pregnant members who get their vaccine at a pharmacy will need prior authorization.
Beyfortus® and Synagis® are available for infants and children They both provide antibodies to help fight the virus. Ask your provider which is right for your child. These are given at your provider’s office.
RSV season in Illinois is from October 1, 2024 through February 29, 2025. The CDC recommends high risk groups get a vaccine as soon as possible. Call your provider today. Or visit a pharmacy near you if you are an adult 60 years or older.
